The workshop was initiated and organized by Mr. Akram H. Chowdhury, a leading human rights activist in Bangladesh. He was eventually the instrumental to develop a rehabilitation centre for torture survivors in the land.

BRCT was founded in February1992, as a follow-up to the national workshop on "Human Rights: Rehabilitation of Trauma Victims", held in Dhaka on February 25-26.

The torture survivors and their family expressed their heartfelt support and need for the development and establish of such a center. For the concurrent need and essentiality resulted in the formation of Bangladesh Rehabilitation Centre for Trauma Victims and from that it is the first of its kind and the only organization working with victims of torture in Bangladesh.
